Source The expensive gangster picture was a passion project for Ben Affleck, who directed, wrote, produced, and starred in the story of a Florida rum runner. But critics ripped the picture, calling it dramatically inert and a muddle. That’s left Warner Bros., the studio behind the film flop, looking at a $75 million loss, according to insiders with knowledge of its financing and rival studio executives.
Last week we found out Ben Affleck’s movie Live By Night sucked and sucked bad… Financially, it’s an unmitigated disaster. Losing $75 million on a single project is the stuff that gets you murdered in some dark studio on the Warner Bros lot. He’s had a career of highs and lows but recently it’s been pretty decent since he’s turned to directing. Unfortunately Ben’s fingerprints are all over this thing. He wrote, produced, directed, and starred in it. It was all on him, everything. Capital ‘F’ Failure.
That’s the type of failure that changes a man, and lucky for us it didn’t take long to see how that change would take shape:
Source Earlier tonight, Ben Affleck and Warner Bros. each released statements indicating that Affleck had stepped down as director of The Batman, the stand-alone Batman movie in which he is set to star opposite Joe Manganiello. The move is ruffling feathers in Hollywood and on social media, with fans and critics… assuming that Affleck’s reason (directing a film of this scope while also starring and wearing a Batman costume the whole time is daunting as hell) isn’t telling the whole story.
Yup. Ben Affleck will no longer direct The Batman. He’s the high school kid who got dumped by the hot girl so he decides to quit the football team. He’s taking his first step towards shutting down. His confidence is dead. Another bad movie could make Ben dead too. If the upcoming Justice League tanks we should all brace ourselves for the bad news of Ben accidentally jumping off a roof. I’m only slightly exaggerating… wikipedia tells me he’s divorced, has a gambling problem, and a former alcoholic. Not such a wild thought when you connect those dots.
But will Ben stepping down as director be good for the movie? Maybe. I believe him when he says directing a movie like that while wearing a batman costume is daunting, but that didn’t stop him from directing Batman vs Superman or the Justice League. Maybe Ben learned that doing too much ends up hurting the product. Or maybe he’s just super hurt feelings and we should send him flowers to show him we care with a card that says we like him just the same.
